11/06/2008: 'Chances for the healthy development of children - a European Challenge' is the topic of a hearing organised by Marie Panayotopoulos-Cassiotou MEP and Angelika Niebler MEP tomorrow, 12 June 2008, in the European Parliament.
Over 200 million children in the world suffer from disabilities. These children have the same rights as any other child. They and their families need the assistance of various specialists: physicians, psychologists, therapists, pedagogues, who should work closely together. Multi-sensory therapy and integrative education, which encompass medical, psychological and educational knowledge, and the needs of the child, are the basis for guaranteeing the rights of all children.
During the conference, renowned medical experts, researchers, and experts from the European Commission will exchange views on how to better address the problems of children with disabilities. This can be achieved in particular through the development of early diagnosis techniques and further research activities, measures for their full social and professional integration later in life, thus transforming the challenges they face into opportunities.
